Provincial High School badminton and Girls 2A basketball championships
scheduled this weekend

Three provincial high school teams will be crowned champions this coming weekend. The High School Athletic Federation will be hosting two badminton and one basketball tournament.

The Girls 2A Basketball tournament is being hosted by Bonne Bay Academy in Woody Point. Three teams will play the double round robin event to determine the finalists. Play begins Thursday morning. The championship game is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Saturday. In addition to the host, Bonne Bay, Lakewood Academy (Glenwood) and D.C. Young (Port Hope Simpson) will be also competing.

Discovery Collegiate in Bonavista is the host school for the 3A Badminton event. Team and individual competitions will take place over a two day period. The team competition takes place on Friday with five teams competing in a round robin format. Each encounter between teams will consist of five matches, one each of boys singles, girls singles, boys doubles, girls doubles and mixed doubles. The top four teams will advance to semi-final play with the semi-final winners playing in the championship. Teams from Bishop White All Grade (Port Rexton), St. Peters Academy (Westport), Canon Richards High (Flowers Cove) and J.C. Erhardt (Makkovik) along with the host, Discovery Collegiate, will be vying for the championship banner. Individuals from these schools as well as Main River Academy will compete in the individual championship, where champions will be declared in each of the five disciplines.

The 4A Badminton championships are scheduled to take place at Glovertown Academy using the same format and procedure. Six teams will take to the courts. In addition to the host Glovertown, Queen Elizabeth High (Foxtrap), Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts), Dorset Collegiate (Pilley�s Island), Stephenville High and Jakeman All Grade (Trout River) will compete in the team event. Joining these athletes in the individual competition will be individuals from Baie Verte High, Indian River High and Templeton Collegiate.

All teams involved will be competing for gold, silver team medals and the championship banner. Gold, Silver and Bronze medals will be presented in the individual events. As well, the Team Sportsmanship banner will be awarded as part of our Sportsmanship First Program which is sponsored by Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador. Individual sportsmanship awards will also be presented.

All the Federation�s tournaments are sponsored by School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Labrador and Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador.
