The following is being distributed at the request of the Office of the Citizens Representative:

Fraser March, Citizens Representative for the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, today announced the results of the Community Intake Seminars held last week on the Great Northern Peninsula.

"Our investigator sat with a number of individuals and one group over the course of his visits to St. Anthony, Plum Point, Port aux Choix and Rocky Harbour. People attended from all over the area. During these meetings, individual and systemic problems with government and semi-governmental agencies were discussed in confidence. Many citizens also came forward to learn more about the offices role and mandate," Mr. March said.

"The people of the Northern Peninsula have identified a number of issues that deserve to be addressed, some of which include access to affordable housing and home care as well as issues such as the school tax and complaints relating to the activities of some municipal councils," he added.

Community Intake Seminars are designed to accommodate individuals or groups of people with common grievances, as well as educate the public on the Office of the Citizens Representative and the Citizens Representative Act.

The Office of the Citizens Representative strives to be accessible to citizens in rural areas and to that end, seminars will continue throughout 2003 with further details to be announced.
