Badger claims process near completion

Oliver Langdon, Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs and minister responsible for the Newfoundland and Labrador Emergency Measures Organization (EMO), provided an update today regarding claims appeals completed after the deputy minister met with the council and citizens representatives in Badger last week.

"Last week, we committed to undertake another review of claims that were in the appeals phase. That review has been completed with registered letters sent late yesterday to the 23 residents involved. This represents the final offer from EMO for these claims," said Minister Langdon. "It is essential that the process remain consistent and fair, and I am confident that it has been. Claims were processed within the same guidelines as all other Badger claims and those from the west coast flood."

Approximately $5 million has been provided to residents of Badger for property loss, structural damages and mitigation.

Progress is being made on the new subdivision, which will be paid for by the provincial government at a cost of approximately $1 million. The tender for water and sewer servicing for the new subdivision has been awarded to Marine Contracting of Pasadena.

"Surveyors will be on the site today, with physical work to begin on Monday," said Minister Langdon. "Actual home construction is expected to begin within the next couple of weeks." To date, 23 residents have signed a letter of intent to build in the subdivision.

In recognizing the financial difficulty that the town was in after the flood, the province relieved the town of its total outstanding debt of $1.64 million. The province also invested $1 million, in the response phase of the emergency and which included extensive removal of ice from the towns streets.

The expected total cost of responding to the Badger flood will be in the range of $10-15 million.
