The following is being distributed at the request of Buckmasters Circle Community Centre:

A Decade of Growth

Today community residents, staff, volunteers and invited guests will gather at the Buckmasters Circle Community Centre to celebrate the centres 10th anniversary. Joan Marie Aylward, MHA-St. Johns Centre will attend and will also bring greetings on behalf of Oliver Langdon, Minister Responsible for Housing. Frank Galgay, Ward Councillor, City of St. Johns, representatives of Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC) and members of the Board of Directors of Buckmasters Circle will also be on hand to celebrate 10 years of growth and serving the community.

Located in the centre of the city, the Buckmasters Circle Community Centre serves a population of approximately 625 people in a 208-unit social housing development, owned, operated and maintained by NLHC. Opened in July of 1993, the centre was established to provide programs and services to address a variety of social, educational and recreational issues within the community. Since its creation, the centre has evolved tremendously to address health and parenting issues.

"The people of Buckmasters Circle area should be proud of the way they have turned four NLHC housing units into such an integral part of their community," said Minister Aylward. "The Community Centre serves hundreds of people in the community and provides programs tailored to meet the needs of the residents. It has become a source of pride throughout the area."

"As the minister responsible for social housing throughout the province, Ive had the opportunity to visit many of the community centres. I have seen the valuable work they do within their communities, and experienced the dedication and commitment of the staff and volunteers. It is this type of community development that will sustain healthy, supportive and safe communities like Buckmasters Circle throughout the province," said Minister Langdon.

With its dedicated staff and volunteers, the centre offers a wide range of programs such as a Breakfast Program, 50+ Program, Play and Learn, Adult Learners, Parents and Tots and a Healthy Baby Club. Through a community-development approach, residents are empowered to become a crucial part of the communitys sustainability. The centre firmly believes that people need to be actively involved in their community to feel a sense of ownership and act as true community advocates on their own behalf.

Margaret Evans, Buckmasters Circle resident commented: "As a senior in the Buckmasters community, Im able to enjoy my life to the fullest. Being able to visit a nurse at the Seniors Lifestyle Clinics and go on outings with the 50+ group is great. The support of the centre, its staff and volunteers truly makes Buckmasters Circle a home for me and many other seniors."

Buckmasters Circle Community Centres Decade of Growth anniversary celebrations will be held at 129 Buckmasters Circle on Tuesday, June 10, 2003 between 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
