Recognizing the value of volunteers

In celebration of Volunteer Week 2003, April 27 - May 3, Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC) today hosted a Tenant Association Volunteer Luncheon, at MacMorran Community Centre. The luncheon was attended by Leslie J. Dean, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer and J. Mary Marshall, Chief Operating Officer, NLHC.

"Although we set aside a special week each year to recognize the important contributions that volunteers make to our communities, lets not forget to show our appreciation each and every day," said Oliver Langdon, Minster responsible for Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation. "Without the help of volunteers many services would not be available throughout our province. The hard work and dedication of our volunteers make our communities self-reliant and great places to build futures."

"At NLHC we recognize the important role volunteers play in our neighbourhoods. Without the help of volunteers, many programs offered by our community centres would not be available in our neighbourhoods," said Mr. Dean. "It is this kind of dedication and initiative that has helped propel our neighbourhoods forward - making them self-reliant and true advocates for strong and healthy communities. For just these reasons, we are truly grateful to our volunteers each and every day."

The volunteers honoured at the luncheon are members of the many NLHC tenant associations throughout St. Johns. These associations recognize the diverse backgrounds and needs of their communities, and work to provide programs and opportunities not often readily available. With the help of tenant associations, NLHC is able to remain in close contact with its many clients. These partnerships have become a valuable educational tool for everyone involved.

Special congratulations are also extended to Michelle Baker, President of the People on the Move Tenant Association. Ms. Baker recently received the Queens Golden Jubilee Award in recognition of her outstanding achievement in volunteerism. The Millennium Dream Team Tenant Association also received the Building Healthy Communities Recognition Award from the City of St. Johns for their commitment to keeping their neighbourhood a clean and beautiful.
