The following is being distributed at the request of the Office of the Fire Commissioner:

Advisory: Check snow accumulation around air intakes and exterior vents

With snow accumulation, is the possible fire hazard that may exist when thru-wall air intakes and exterior vents for air exchangers, propane fireplaces, clothes dryers, furnaces or stoves become blocked with snow. The Office of the Fire Commissioner advises that these areas should be kept clear of snow accumulation.

In the case of fuel-fired appliances using propane, oil or wood, there may also be a carbon monoxide problem created in the home or structure due to inadequate combustion air reaching the appliance or the appliance not exhausting properly. Homeowners are advised to check all appliances and vents to ensure that they are clear and working properly. As well, the fire commissioner reminds the public to ensure that all smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working properly and checked on a regular basis.

Questions with respect to the general operation of units or appliances should be directed to the supplier/installer. Citizens are encouraged to contact the Office of the Fire Commissioner or their local fire department with questions on these and other fire safety measures.
