NLIS 5 June 9, 2003 (Mines and Energy) Minister Noel provides update on Voiseys Bay activities Mines and Energy Minister Walter Noel today provided an update on activities planned for the Voiseys Bay project during this work season. In 2002, construction work focused on developing camp infrastructure at Voiseys Bay, a 12 km road from the port to the mine site, an 800 meter temporary runway, and a temporary dock, employing approximately 250 people. "Voiseys Bay Nickel Company (VBNC) officials have advised that they will focus on expanding the existing construction camp infrastructure and establish the communications system during this work season," said Minister Noel. "This work includes excavating the mill site, constructing additional roads, building a permanent airstrip and settling ponds, and installing the concentrator building foundation. "At Argentia, VBNC is moving forward with construction of their office/warehouse scheduled to be completed in September. Environmental baseline studies will continue, engineering studies related to site utilities and road infrastructure will be carried out and a fiber-optic connection to VBNCs new facilities will be installed. "Skilled workers including labourers, carpenters, electricians, heavy equipment operators, and truck drivers will be required for work this year. All non-management positions will be governed by the collective bargaining agreement signed between the Resource Development Council and the Voiseys Bay Employers Association, and government will continue to monitor hiring practices to ensure that the commitments made under the Industrial and Employment Benefits Agreement and the adjacency principle are being followed. Approximately 500 people are expected to be employed at the site this year. "Government continuously monitors the progress on the Voiseys Bay project, and looks forward to a productive work season for VBNC."
