Minister Noel welcomes members of Energy Council to province

Mines and Energy Minister Walter Noel today welcomed members of the prestigious Energy Council of America who will be in St. Johns this week to meet with senior officials from both the provincial government and the energy industry.

Council chair Jim Ellington, past-chair Matt Smith and executive director Lori Cameron will visit the province and convey their gratitude to government, corporate sponsors and the people of Newfoundland and Labrador for their support of the Northeastern Energy Forum 2002, held in St. Johns last August. They will also hold detailed discussions on mutual energy interests with senior officials from both industry and the Department of Mines and Energy.

"These opportunities provide this province with the opportunity to further explore Newfoundland and Labradors emerging role as an energy supplier to the northeastern United States," said Minister Noel. "Membership in the Energy Council offers our province exposure to current energy policies, potential energy markets, and encourages new investment and exploration in our energy sector."

The Energy Council is a legislative organization of 10 energy-producing states, ranging from the Gulf of Mexico to the Arctic Ocean. These states produce more than 80 per cent of U.S. oil and gas output, as well as coal, uranium and products of renewable energy.

Newfoundland and Labrador became an international affiliate of the Energy Council in December of 2001. The only other international affiliates are Venezuela, and the provinces of Alberta and Nova Scotia.
