Minister updates employment numbers in offshore oil and gas sector

Mines and Energy Minister Walter Noel today updated employment numbers in the provinces offshore oil and gas sector. Over 3,000 people are directly employed with the three offshore oil projects taking place in Newfoundland and Labrador, and this does not include indirect jobs associated with oil and gas activities.

"There are currently in excess of 1,300 people employed in the development phase of the White Rose project, and upwards of 60 per cent of these people are employed in Newfoundland and Labrador.

"This number factors in all aspects of the project including those components, such as the Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel hull and turret, which cannot be built in this province or anywhere in Canada. When you examine employment on topsides fabrication, which represents the key area where Newfoundland and Labrador has the ability to participate, virtually all employment to date has taken place in this province. Over 90 per cent of the people employed are Newfoundlanders and Labradorians."

Minister Noel also said that the type of positions held by Newfoundlanders and Labradorians on the White Rose project are impressive. "Over 62 per cent of White Rose management and technical positions in this province are held by Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. These are impressive statistics for a province that is in the early stages of its offshore oil and gas industry, and once again demonstrates the ability of our people to respond to the needs of a new, highly challenging industry."

With respect to the two projects in the operating stage of development, Minister Noel noted that total employment on Hibernia is currently 778 people, with 88 per cent being Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. Total employment on Terra Nova is currently 935 people, with 85 per cent being residents of this province. Over 60 per cent of the people in management positions are Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.
