Minister announces appointments to Advisory Council on Occupational Health and Safety

Percy Barrett, Minister of Labour, is pleased to announce the following appointments/ reappointments to the Advisory Council on Occupational Health and Safety: Mr. Dennis Hogan, Chairperson; Bob Pike, Management Representative; and Cynthia Burke, Labour Representative. Mr. Hogan and Mr. Pike�s appointments were effective as of July 11, 2003 and Ms. Burke�s reappointment was effective February 2, 2003. All appointments will remain in effect for a three year period.

Other members of the Advisory Council include: Mr. David Rex, Vice Chairperson; Ms. Kim Dunphy, ADM Occupational Health and Safety; Ms. Ann Marie Hann, CEO, Workplace Health Safety and Compensation Commission; Mr. Jim Skinner and Mr. George Sharpe, Labour Representatives and Mr. Wayne Pardy and Mr. Len Knox, Management Representatives.

"These are competent people with excellent qualifications and experience," said Minister Barrett. "They bring a range of experiences and perspectives to the table, and I look forward to their contribution in their respective capacities on the Council."

Biographies:

Mr. Dennis Hogan holds the position of Development Executive with Oceans Advance. In this capacity he leads the development of the National Research Council�s (NRC) ocean technology initiatives. Prior to joining Oceans Advance in 2002, Dennis held the position of Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of the Newfoundland and Labrador Construction Safety Association. In 2001, he was named one of the top 50 CEO�s in Atlantic Canada by Atlantic Business Magazine.

Mr. Bob Pike is the Manager of Corporate Communications and Customer Services with Newfoundland Power with added responsibility for safety and work methods with the corporation. Bob has been with Newfoundland Power for over 25 years and has held several senior management positions over this period.

Ms. Cynthia Burke has been reappointed to the Council for her second term as Labour Representative. She is the Secretary /Treasurer with the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees (NAPE). Prior to being elected to this position, Ms. Burke worked as a Client Services Officer with the Department of Human Resources and Employment and has been employed in the public sector for 30 years.
