Province increasing efforts to collect outstanding fines

Justice Minister Kelvin Parsons today announced that the province is providing $132,000 to enhance outstanding fines collections.

"More aggressive collection efforts are paying off. It is governments responsibility to ensure that every possible action is taken to recover outstanding debts," said Justice Minister Kelvin Parsons.

In December 2001, the Department of Justice announced new initiatives to collect from outstanding debtors. There have been significant increases in fines collections as a result of the drive.

"We still have a long way to go to recover the huge volume of debt. This additional money will allow the department to hire an additional three staff to pursue aggressive action to ensure government gets the monies it is owed," said Minister Parsons.
