Initiatives to collect from outstanding debtors paying off

Justice Minister Kelvin Parsons said today he is pleased to announce that new initiatives to collect from outstanding debtors is paying off.

The departments Fines Administration Division collected $6,324,538 in 2002 from January to December, compared to $5,636,604 for the same period in 2001.

"The figures for the past year are a clear indication of the gains being made by the department staff," noted Minister Parsons.

In December 2001, the Department of Justice announced its intention to implement a system to allow for more aggressive collection efforts. Fines defaulters who refuse to pay their fines, after being given opportunities to do so, can have their vehicles and other property seized by a Deputy Sheriff or have their wages attached if fines are not paid.

"The sophisticated technology and a dedicated staff, working together, will reinforce the credibility of the fines as a justice sanction," said the minister.
