Getting the Message Out program becomes model for PEI

Getting the Message Out (GMO), a marketing and strategic communications program administered by the Department of Industry, Trade and Rural Development, has become a model for a program that the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) in Prince Edward Island will launch in that province in September 2003.

Sheila Fudge, manager of the GMO program, was invited to PEI last month where she met with government officials and consultants to provide insight and advice in developing the program in that province, titled Planting Seeds - Making Waves.

"The fact that PEI has recognized our GMO program as the model it wants to build on is a testament to the program and its success in this province," said Industry, Trade and Rural Development Minister Judy Foote. "The program is aimed at nurturing and promoting entrepreneurship and confidence in the economic future of Newfoundland and Labrador, especially among our young people. It helps build a can-do attitude in our province."

The GMO program is the only one of its kind in Atlantic Canada. It is a public education program intended to increase awareness of economic development and entrepreneurial opportunities in all areas of the province. GMO has two target audiences: youth-targeted presentations in high schools and adult-targeted presentations to groups like Chambers of Commerce, town councils and adult education groups. In 2002, over 300 presentations were made by the GMO team, reaching over 9,000 people from coastal Labrador to St. Johns.

The Getting the Message Out program is a federal-provincial initiative funded jointly by the Department of Industry, Trade and Rural Development, Human Resources Development Canada and ACOA, in part through the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Comprehensive Economic Development Agreement. The Department of Industry, Trade and Rural Development administers the program.
