Employment continues upward trend for September

For the ninth consecutive month employment in the province increased on a year over year basis.

According to the latest Labour Force Survey from Statistics Canada employment in Newfoundland and Labrador for the month of September rose to 228,100, an increase of 3.2 per cent or 7,100 jobs, as compared to the same time period last year. Growth was concentrated in the service sector.

The unemployment rate stood at 14.1 per cent for the month, a decrease of 0.5 percentage points. The labour force participation rate also experienced an increase of 1.5 percentage points to 60.5 per cent compared to the same time period last year.

"As with every month we are very pleased to report on the monthly employment numbers provided by Statistics Canada and happy to report employment continues to grow in the province," said Ralph Wiseman, Minister of Human Resources and Employment.

On a seasonally adjusted basis employment rose by 0.4 percentage points compared to August 2003. The unemployment rate increased 0.8 percentage points as the number of people entering the labour force exceeded the growth in employment. Seasonally adjusted data looks at patterns of employment change within the current year from one month to the next, whereas the actual data compares employment this year to employment last year.
