June sees rising employment numbers in Newfoundland and Labrador

The latest Labour Force Survey from Statistics Canada showed continued employment growth in the province for the month of June. The unemployment rate in June was 13.7 per cent, the lowest unemployment rate for the month of June since 1981.

"The results of this survey confirm the value of our policies focussing on the steady growth of employment in Newfoundland and Labrador," said Ralph Wiseman, Minister of Human Resources and Employment. "The past six months have reported a positive trend in employment which we expect to continue for the remainder of the year."

Other labour force indicators also reflect positive trends. Employment for the province stood at 238,000, compared to 229,500 in June last year, representing an increase of 3.7 per cent, or approximately 8,500 person years. Since June 2002, the labour force participation rate climbed 0.9 points to 62.8 per cent, the labour force grew 1.5 per cent to 275,700 and the employment rate increased by two percentage points to 54.3 per cent.

These are record highs for employment, participation rate, labour force size, and employment rate for the month of June.

There has been general growth in the overall provincial labour market. On a year-to-date basis, both the number of persons employed and the number of persons in the labour force grew by 2.2 per cent compared to the first six months of 2002.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, employment was relatively unchanged while the unemployment rate decreased by one percentage points from May to stand at 15.4 per cent. Seasonally adjusted data is used to look at patterns of change within the current year from one month to the next, whereas the unadjusted data is used to compare the current to the previous year.
