Labour Market Development Council goes Online

Wayne Russell, chair of the Labour Market Development Council (LMDC), announced today that the LMDC has established a new web site at www.NLLMDC.org .

Mr. Russell said: "This resource will be another tool to receive input from our stakeholders and the larger community and will help the LMDC move ahead in exploring labour market issues and providing advice to government.

"This new Web site will allow us to make public our research results and conclusions to help inform discussions and to provide the public with a single point of contact. For those interested in market issues in other jurisdictions, I encourage people to visit and explore the links to sector councils and related organisations."

Ralph Wiseman, Minister of Human Resources and Employment, added: "This internet presence will make the progress of the LMDC available to all interested people and groups and will allow anyone to contact the LMDC directly. Communication and collaboration with the partners and the larger community is essential to improving the effectiveness of our economy and the labour market."

The LMDC reflects governments policy of creating strategic partnerships among governments, business, labour, academia and community-based organizations to achieve common goals and to build economic success. Announced in the Speech from the Throne in spring 2000, to act as a forum for dialogue, collaboration and coordination among the partners so as to foster the active and broader participation of constituent groups addressing strategic labour market issues, it will advise government during the formation of the Labour Market Strategy. The development of a Labour Market Strategy is a major commitment in the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador's Strategic Social Plan.

The LMDC draws its 12-person membership from the business, labour, education and social sectors with an ex-officio presence from government. It has recently been expanded to include additional representation from the employer and labour sectors.
