Grand Bank Health Centre deferred

Elizabeth Marshall, Minister of Health and Community Services, today announced the award of the latest tender on the Grand Bank Health Centre is being deferred, and the future of the project will be assessed as part of the 2004-05 budget process.

"Until we know the state of the provinces fiscal situation, it would not be prudent for us to move forward with awarding a contract that would commit us to further spending," said Minister Marshall.

To date, just under 20 per cent of the total project cost has been spent. At this early stage in the construction process, it is timely to review the project. For that reason, the contract for the main building package and duplexes that was pending will not be awarded until the review is complete.

"While I understand the residents of the Grand Bank area will be concerned about this deferral," said Minister Marshall, "it is necessary for us to be prudent in spending our health care dollars and ensure that health services meet the needs of the population."
