17th case of rabies confirmed on Northern Peninsula

Provincial veterinarian Dr. Hugh Whitney reported today that another case of rabies has been confirmed on the Northern Peninsula. This latest confirmation brings the total number of known rabies cases in the region to 17.

Dr. Whitney said this latest case involves a sheep from the same farm in Daniels Harbour that has already had two sheep test positive for rabies. This sheep died on May 6 at which time it was sent to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency for tests.

"As a result of this latest confirmation, a quarantine period of 40 days will be re-established for the affected farm," said Dr. Whitney.

The Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods will continue to work with farmers in the area to address concerns stemming from this latest positive confirmation. In addition, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency will continue to monitor the situation in the event further cases may develop.

Dr. Whitney continues to advise residents on the Northern Peninsula to continue to follow the
recommendations previously circulated:

  • Vaccinate all pets.
  • Keep pets under control at all times.
  • Control stray animals in communities.
  • Avoid and report all strange acting animals.

Health officials are again reminding the public that any bites, scratches, or other areas of contact with wild animal saliva should be washed immediately with soap and water and individuals should then contact their local physician or public health office for further advice. Any other individuals concerned about exposure to any potentially rabid animals should also contact their local physician or public health office.
