Minister announces special licence plate recognition for veterans

George Sweeney, Minister of Government Services and Lands, made a presentation today to the annual general meeting of the Royal Canadian Legion Provincial Command at Branch 47 in Labrador City.

"It is my great pleasure to be here in Labrador West to present the first Veterans Licence Plate issued in Newfoundland and Labrador. Government is proud to launch this program which recognizes the valuable contribution of veterans. These individuals have put their lives in jeopardy for the betterment of society and should be commended," said Minister Sweeney.

"The Motor Registration Division of the Department of Government Services and Lands and the Provincial Command of the Royal Canadian Legion in Newfoundland and Labrador have worked together over the past few months to prepare for the commencement of this program. This partnership will continue with the administration and distribution of licence plates to qualified veterans.

"This program has been established as a small token of appreciation to signify the historical and present day sacrifices of all veterans. I encourage all veterans residing in Newfoundland and Labrador to avail of this program starting September 2, 2003."

There is an established criteria for the eligibility to receive a veterans licence plate. Persons who wish to avail of this program are required to contact the Royal Canadian Legion who will administer the application process. Once forms are approved by the legion, applicants can receive a veterans plate from local Motor Vehicle Registration offices across the province.

More information on this program can be accessed by contacting Motor Vehicle Registration at (709) 729-2519.
