Minister announces changes to weigh scale protocol

George Sweeney, Minister of Government Services and Lands, has advised the owners and operators of commercial vehicles of a forthcoming change in the meaning of the flashing lights at the provincial weigh scales.

As it currently stands, a flashing light at a provincial scale facility means the scale is closed and commercial vehicles may by-pass the scale. As of July 21, 2003, the flashing light will mean the scale is open for business and commercial vehicles must enter the scale to be weighed and inspected.

"This change brings the use and meaning of the flashing light into conformity with the rest of Canada. The signs in advance of all weigh scale sites will be changed to reflect this new process," said Minister Sweeney.

The minister extended his appreciation to Jon Summers and Wilbert Collins of the Newfoundland and Labrador Independent Truckers Association and to Gord Peddle of the Newfoundland and Labrador Carriers Association for bringing this issue to his attention.

"The continuance of a strong working relationship between government and industry promotes good governance. Many truckers operating in Newfoundland and Labrador also travel to other provinces, making harmonization important to facilitate the streamlining of the trucking industry."
