Minister announces changes to the Lottery Licensing Regulations

George Sweeney, Minister of Government Services and Lands, is pleased to inform the public that changes have been made to the provincial Lottery Licensing Regulations. These changes result from a period of consultation between the department and industry partners.

Regulations were changed about a year ago to eliminate Early Bird Draws due to inconsistencies observed through departmental audits and direct complaints from the public. At the request of members of the fundraising industry, the department began revisiting the issue during the past few months.

The minister stated: "My department was able to adequately address this issue by taking the time to consult with the proper people and change the regulations. The reinstatement of Early Bird Draws is at the request of lottery operators, who feel that a proper accountability mechanism could be put into place. Im pleased that we were able to accomplish this, and all those involved walked away from the table united."

There were some other minor administrative changes to the legislation, which are also expected to help streamline the process of licensing and regulating lottery operations.

"These changes are not major, but they contribute to the commitment of the government to an agenda of accountability. By looking at existing legislation and finding ways to make improvements, the government is able to show that were working on behalf of the people, and that we listen to what they have to say," said Minister Sweeney.

Copies of the changes to the Lottery Licensing Regulations are available on Page 285 of the March 14 edition of the Newfoundland and Labrador Gazette://www.gov.nl.ca/QueensPrinter/Gazette/2003/NLG030314.pdf
