Reminder to public regarding enactment of Bill
15 banning the
use of handheld cellular phones while driving

George Sweeney, Minister of Government Services and Lands, wishes to remind members of the public that the law banning the use of handheld cellular phones while driving comes into effect April 1.

"This law was passed during the fall session of the House of Assembly in 2002," said Minister Sweeney. "We feel that it was important to wait an appropriate length of time before enacting this law so that users could purchase the necessary equipment for compliance."

The minister believes that this law will make for safer roadways in the province, and hopes that this will raise awareness among drivers. Reducing driver distraction is an issue important to the government and to the public.

"This law is meant to ensure the safety of drivers and pedestrians. Banning the use of handheld cellular phones will help promote safe driving on our roads. Members of the public and several organizations have been calling on government to act on this issue for a long time," said Minister Sweeney.

The Department of Government Services and Lands wishes to inform the public about safe alternatives to handheld cellular phones. The department will be launching a Web site and releasing an information package for motorists in the near future.

"The level of awareness of this legislation is already high, but it is important that the public understands this new law. We feel that it is important that motorists are aware of the law and the potential consequences," said Minister Sweeney.

Any questions or concerns about the legislation which becomes law April 1 should be directed to the Department of Government Services and Lands or cellular service providers. A copy of the legislation can be found on the departments website at //www.gov.nl.ca/gsl.
