Silviculture work announced for Cartwright-L�Anse au Clair

Rick Woodford, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, and Yvonne Jones, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture and MHA for Cartwright-L�Anse au Clair have announced funding in the amount of $44,853 for a silviculture project for the district of Cartwright-L�Anse au Clair. Funding for this initiative has been made available through the Provincial Silviculture Program.

"Silviculture initiatives are a key component of government�s sustainable forest management strategy," said Minister Woodford. "Government is committed to an aggressive silviculture program, which is vital to our province�s reforestation efforts and the protection of our valuable forest resources."

Minister Jones said, "The future development of the forest industry along the south coast of Labrador is significant to the economic stability of the region. Under the new Forest Management Plan that has been developed by the people in the district, silviculture is a key component. The project involves the planting of 258,500 tree seedlings over a total area of 94 hectares near Cartwright and Port Hope Simpson. Work began on September 2 and will create 25 person weeks of employment in the area."
