Silviculture initiative announced for Bonavista South

Forest Resources and Agrifoods Minister Rick Woodford has announced $112,050 in funding for a silviculture initiative in the district of Bonavista South. Funding for the project has been made available through the Provincial Silviculture Program.

Minister Woodford says silviculture projects ongoing throughout the province this summer will play a vital role in sustaining a healthy forest resource for the province. "It is through initiatives such as this site preparation project that government is demonstrating its commitment to responsible forest management," said the minister. "The Provincial Silviculture Program also creates meaningful employment in rural communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador."

The silviculture project will take place throughout Forest Ecosystem Management District 2 and involve site preparation of approximately 450 hectares of cutover forest areas.

The contract for the project was awarded to Quest Inc. The project is expected to create 20 person weeks of employment. Work is scheduled to commence August 27 and is expected to last approximately one month.
