Terrenceville men convicted on wildlife and fisheries violations

Two men from Terrenceville were recently convicted at Provincial Court in Grand Bank on wildlife and fisheries violations. The charges arose from a year-long undercover investigation conducted by conservation officers with the Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods in the Terrenceville and Monkstown Road areas on the Burin Peninsula. The investigation began in 2001 in an effort to combat the illegal commercialization of big game.

Forty-year old Timothy Clarke and 30 year old Scott Lavhey were fined a total of $5,500 and $4,000, respectively, for offences against the Federal Fisheries Act and the Provincial Wildlife Act. Offences included trafficking in Atlantic salmon, illegal possession of salmon, and illegal possession of and trafficking in big game, namely moose.

Both men are also prohibited from holding a big game licence for five years and prohibited from angling in inland waters for two years. Quantities of moose meat and salmon, which were seized during the investigation, were also forfeited to the Crown.
