Silviculture funding announced for Northern Peninsula

Forest Resources and Agrifoods Minister Rick Woodford has announced total funding in the amount of $102,440 for two silviculture projects in St. Barbe district on the Northern Peninsula.  Funding for the projects is being provided through the provincial governments silviculture program.

Mr. Woodford said silviculture initiatives play a vital role in sustaining a future wood supply for the province, as well as helping ensure a healthy forest. "Initiatives like the planting of tree seedlings and pre-commercial thinning demonstrate governments commitment to responsible forest management. In addition, the provincial silviculture program creates meaningful employment opportunities, especially in rural communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador."

N.V.C. Limited was awarded one contract valued at $66,000 to undertake thinning activity that will promote tree growth among younger tree stands. The other contract, valued at $36,440, has been awarded to Budland Enterprises Limited that will provide for the regeneration of 185 hectares of cut-over sites with the planting of black spruce seedlings.

Both projects are scheduled to commence on June 16 and will provide employment for 30 individuals for 16 weeks. Activity will take place in the area of Mt. St. Margaret.
