Silviculture projects announced for Lewisporte district

Forest Resources and Agrifoods Minister Rick Woodford has announced total funding in the amount of $174,740 for two silviculture projects in the provincial district of Lewisporte. The funding is being provided through the provincial governments silviculture program.

Mr. Woodford said responsible management of our forest resource through such measures as silviculture activity will help ensure our provinces forests remain productive into the future. "Silviculture initiatives demonstrate governments commitment to sustainable forest management. In addition, such work provides a significant boost to local economies, particularly in rural communities."

Quest Inc. of Birchy Bay was awarded the contract in the amount of $100,740 for one project that will see site preparation activity take place on 460 hectares of commercially harvested forested sites. This project will prepare the area for tree seedling planting next summer.

Emerald Forestry Services was awarded the other contract valued at $74,000 to undertake pre-commercial thinning activity on a 100-hectare area in the vicinity of Bellmans Pond/Long Pond. This project will improve overall stand development and health.

Both projects commenced on June 9 and will employ 11 persons for 15 weeks.
