Middle Arm man convicted on big game offences

Nelson Prowse of Middle Arm was recently convicted in court at Baie Verte on seven big game offences, including illegal possession of big game, trafficking in big game and hunting without a valid licence.

Mr. Prowse was fined $7,000 and prohibited from obtaining a big game licence for five years. He was also placed on probation for three years in which Mr. Prowse is not to possess any firearms or ammunition (except for seal hunting) and not to hold or possess any type of hunting or fishing licence. In addition, his probation states that he is not to be in a wooded area 50 meters from a highway or a community.

The offences took place in the fall of 2001 and were the result of an undercover operation in the Middle Arm area conducted by the Legislation and Compliance Division of the Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods and included conservation officers at the Springdale District Office. Five other individuals who were charged as a result of this operation were convicted last year, while charges against three others are due to go to court in June.
