Minister declares 2003 forest fire season

Rick Woodford, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, today announced the dates for the 2003 forest fire season.

The forest fire season for the island portion of the province will commence midnight, May 16 and remain in effect until midnight, September 21. In Labrador, the forest fire season will begin on May 23 and remain in effect until midnight, September 21.

Minister Woodford said the departments forest fire suppression staff have been busy preparing for the 2003 season and are now ready to serve the public in protecting our forest resources. "Approximately 100 fire suppression staff, supported by conservation officers, will be available to perform fire fighting duties when and where needed throughout the summer," said Minister Woodford. "Equipment has been serviced and water bombers are in the process of being strategically placed throughout the province so they can respond to emergency situations as quickly as possible."

The department will operate a fleet of six water bombers and four light helicopters during the 2003 forest fire season. If extra fire fighting resources are required that are not available locally, the department will avail of the Mutual Aid Resources Sharing Agreement (MARS) with other provinces.

Minister Woodford also reminded the general public that in accordance with forest fire regulations, a Permit To Burn is required for lighting outdoor fires for the purpose of clearing land or burning brush within 300 metres of forest land. The public can apply for permits at regional or forest management district offices throughout the province. The lighting of fires for personal use (cooking, camping) does not require a permit, but forest fire regulations must be followed.

"Although we are ready for the 2003 forest fire season, I encourage everyone to act responsibly when in or near the woods this summer," added Minister Woodford. "The general public are reminded to make sure that fires are properly extinguished. By working together we can help ensure a healthy forest for all of its users."

There have been seven forest fires so far this year - six on the Avalon Peninsula and one in Bay dEspoir. All fires were grass and shrub fires.
