Minister Woodford recognizes National Forest Week

Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, Rick Woodford, said today that May 4-10 has been designated as National Forest Week across Canada.

Minister Woodford said National Forest Week provides an opportunity for all Canadians to observe the importance of our forest resources to our everyday lives, as well as helping create an awareness of our forests� many values, such as social, ecological and economic.

The minister said this year�s theme, �Canada�s Forests, Source of Life�, is an appropriate one as it highlights the important role of our forest resource and the impact it has on everyone in society.

"A vibrant forest ecosystem is indeed key to our quality of life. Our forests play a major role in our everyday lives and it is important that we all do our part to protect our forests for present and future generations," he said.

Mr. Woodford added that government is committed to the protection and sustainable management of our forests. "We are proud of our progressive forest management practices and public consultation process in the development of forest management plans. We will continue to build on our efforts in ensuring that our forests provide economic, social and environmental benefits to the citizens of Newfoundland and Labrador."

Since its first observance over 80 years ago, National Forest Week has greatly enhanced our appreciation for Canada�s forests. Mr. Woodford is calling upon all citizens to reflect on the many benefits we derive from the forests and support National Forest Week in our province this year.
