Funding for Innu and Metis participation in forestry management

The Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, Rick Woodford, said $550,000 is earmarked in this years budget for Innu Nation and Labrador Metis Nation participation in forestry management.

Minister Woodford said that funding in the 2003 Budget will ensure continued participation by the Innu Nation and Labrador Metis Nation in forestry management practices in Labrador. "We have made great strides in working with the Innu and Metis people in the development of Labradors valuable forest resources," said the minister. "Government has signed process agreements with the Innu Nation and a Memorandum of Understanding with the Labrador Metis Nation in forestry management decision-making. I am pleased that funding in this years budget will allow us to build on our efforts to date."

Minister Woodford said working with the Innu and Metis people will enable further development of the forest industry in Labrador for the benefit of their members and the communities in which they live. "Government is committed to input from all stakeholders in forestry management, which will help ensure continued sustainable and prudent development of the timber resource in the region. Indeed, partnering with the Innu Nation and Labrador Metis Nation in forestry management is a milestone in the modern history of Newfoundland and Labrador."
