New agriculture enhancement initiative

Rick Woodford, Minister of Forest Resources and Agrifoods, said Budget 2003 provides funding in the amount of $1.9 million over two years for a new agriculture enhancement initiative. The new initiative will help ensure continued sustainable and environmentally-sound development of our agrifoods industry.

This new agriculture initiative will focus on environmental practices and land preservation to ensure the protection of agricultural land for future generations. "It is governments job to create a favourable environment for future sustainability and enhancement of the agrifoods sector. This new funding will indeed help ensure sustainability and profitability," said Minister Woodford.

The minister stated that an agriculture enhancement fund was committed in last years Throne Speech and todays announcement demonstrates that government has delivered on its commitment. "This new initiative, and funding also announced today for the new Agriculture Policy Framework, along with my departments existing agriculture programs and services, will enable our agriculture industry to propel forward and continue to play a major role in our economy, especially for rural Newfoundland and Labrador."
