Port aux Choix man pleads guilty to wildlife and fisheries violations

A Port aux Choix man has been fined $8,000 after pleading guilty to16 wildlife- related offences during a recent court appearance in Corner Brook. In addition to the fine, Leon Billard is prohibited from obtaining a moose or caribou licence for five years, possessing firearms for two years, as well as prohibited from being near scheduled waters for three years. The judge also forfeited a boat and motor, fishing net, a 30-30 rifle and hunting equipment.

The 16 violations include hunting black bear on Sunday, hunting black bear without a licence, hunting black bear with cubs, hunting moose on Sunday, illegal possession of moose, killing caribou without a licence, allowing caribou meat to spoil, loaded firearm in a vehicle, illegal netting of inland waters, illegal possession of fish and guiding a non-resident without a valid guide licence.

The charges were laid following an undercover operation conducted on the Northern Peninsula in 2000 by conservation officers from the Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods with assistance from Ontario conservation officers. Four other individuals were also convicted last year of several wildlife- related offences as a result of the same investigation, which also saw a Cessna aircraft forfeited to the Crown.
