Three individuals charged for trafficking in big game parts

Two investigations carried out by conservation officers with the Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods have resulted in charges laid against three individuals for trafficking in big game parts.

One investigation took place on the Northern Peninsula in June 2002 and led to the discovery of a large quantity of big game antlers. A man from Blue Cove and a man from Dildo have been charged under the Wildlife Act as a result of the investigation. The men are scheduled to appear in provincial court later this month to enter a plea.

Another investigation has resulted in a Corner Brook resident being charged with trafficking in big game parts. The investigation into this case took place during the fall of 2002 and revealed that big game antlers were being sold from this province through the Internet on the E-Bay website. The individual is scheduled to appear at provincial court in Corner Brook on January 28 to enter a plea. Other individuals are also being investigated for selling big game parts through the Internet.

The Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods wishes to advise the general public that it is illegal to collect, buy or sell big game parts without the proper permits. Individuals convicted of such offences face fines ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 for a first offence and a five year prohibition from obtaining a moose or caribou licence.
