$500,000 allocated for fisheries diversification

Yvonne Jones, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, says government has allocated $500,000 in Budget 2003 for fisheries diversification.

"These funds will assist industry in improving its competitiveness and sustainability," said Minister Jones. "Initiatives include species development, gear development/demonstration for sustainable and viable fishing operations, by-product utilization, vessel design and modifications and quality enhancement initiatives.

"Government must continue to work in partnership with industry, educational institutions and regional development organizations to accelerate industry diversification. Several fisheries development opportunities have been identified in cooperation with industry and we will continue with initiatives to diversify and strengthen our fisheries."
