All-Party Committee continues development of proposal to federal government regarding cod fishery

A Federal/Provincial All-Party Committee adjourned its third meeting today in St. Johns, to discuss the status of the 3Pn4RS and 2J3KL cod fisheries. The committee was formed as a result of an all-party resolution passed in the provinces House of Assembly in November 2002.

The main goal of the meeting today was to review the report from the sub-committee, which will be the basis of the larger committees presentation to the federal government. The sub-committee provided a concise and comprehensive evaluation of the issues surrounding the state of the cod fishery in the province. The report provides a good foundation for the all-prty committees presentation to Ottawa, which will be completed within the next two weeks.

The sub-committee was charged with examining the key issues around the state of the cod fishery including: the status of the 3Pn4RS and 2J3KL cod stocks; a review of the scientific assessment of the stock; measures required to assist stock recovery; and, actions and responses required to maximize the economic opportunities in the fishing industry for the benefit of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

The all-party committee will now work towards completing the report which they will present to the federal government. This report will be completed within the next two weeks, well in advance of Minister Thibaults decision regarding the cod fishery.
