Pre-budget consultations scheduled

Finance Minister Joan Marie Aylward has scheduled a series of pre-Budget roundtables to provide an opportunity for individuals and groups to give their opinions on the direction they would like to see government take in developing its 2003-04 Budget.

Roundtable discussions are scheduled to begin January 20 in Carbonear, and conclude on February 5 with sessions in Happy Valley-Goose Bay and Labrador City. Other consultation sessions are scheduled for Gander, Grand Falls-Windsor, Corner Brook, Stephenville and St. Johns.

In addition to these community roundtables, the Minister is continuing the practice of holding an Electronic Town Hall. This has been scheduled for February 8. Arrangements are being finalized with Memorial University to use Memorials Telemedicine/TETRA facilities for that purpose. Using the technology those facilities provide, the Electronic Town Hall will link various communities with the minister through video and audio conferencing.

"We value the input of all stakeholders and interested individuals and groups in the Budget decision-making process," Minister Aylward said. "I encourage the publics participation in this process and look forward to hearing their views first-hand."

Those who would like to participate in the public forums are requested to register 24 hours prior to the meeting in their communities by telephoning (709)729-2944. Formal written briefs or audio-visual presentations are not required.
