Premier offers condolences on the death of Robert Stanfield

Premier Danny Williams today offered condolences to the Stanfield family and to all Nova Scotians on the sad loss of former premier Robert Lorne Stanfield.

"The government and the people of Newfoundland and Labrador share Nova Scotias sorrow today," said Premier Williams. "Mr. Stanfield was a courageous and resourceful leader, and a fine man. As premier, he changed the face of Nova Scotia both economically and socially, and helped to make it a strong partner in Atlantic Canada. As federal Opposition Leader, he raised the profile of Atlantic Canada and built a stronger relationship of mutual respect between the region and the country as a whole."

Premier Williams also noted that Mr. Stanfield was widely respected and liked within this province. "Robert Stanfield was known as a gentleman in every way - fair-minded, thoughtful and always ready to consider alternatives. He gave his respect to everyone, regardless of walk of life or political conviction, and won everyones respect in return. He is a great loss to us all."
