Premier congratulates senior official on national honour

Premier Danny Williams today extended his congratulations to Deborah Fry, Newfoundland and Labradors deputy minister of Health and Community Services, on being named one of Canadas 100 Most Powerful Women in 2003.

"Ms. Frys service to the government and the province of Newfoundland and Labrador has been exemplary," said Premier Williams. "She has brought her background as both a nurse and a lawyer to bear on her work, and her contribution is felt at many levels and in many areas throughout the Newfoundland and Labrador public service."

Ms. Fry was selected as a recipient of Canadas Most Powerful Women: Top 100 Awards in the Public Sector category. She has served the province as Clerk of the Executive Council and Secretary to Cabinet and as deputy minister in a number of portfolios, including Human Resources and Employment, Education and Employment and Labour Relations.

"Debbie Fry has given her time, her energy and her full ability to this province," the Premier noted. "We are very proud of her accomplishment and credit the Globe and Mail for recognizing her talent."

Ms. Fry will join other award recipients at Canadas Most Powerful Women Summit today in Toronto. The event, sponsored by the Womens Executive Network and the University of Western Ontarios Richard Ivey School of Business, is intended to enhance and hone leadership and management skills.

In 2002, Ms. Fry received the YMCA-YWCA St. Johns Women of Distinction Award and the Queens Golden Jubilee Medal.
