Womens Policy Office to attend meeting of Ministers Responsible for the Status of Women

The 22nd annual federal-provincial-territorial meeting of Ministers Responsible for the Status of Women begins today in Edmonton, Alberta. Yvonne Jones, Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, is unable to attend the meeting, but will be represented at the event by Aisling Gogan, director of research and planning with the Womens Policy Office.

"These meetings provide an opportunity to take stock of the progress that has been made in womens equality, as well as identify the remaining gaps and emerging issues," said Minister Jones. "My staff will also be able to provide my counterparts with insight into whats happening in Newfoundland and Labrador and to learn from experiences across Canada."

Agenda items for the meeting include violence prevention, womens health and economic issues. The ministers will also discuss the importance of encouraging business leaders to improve recruitment and retention of women workers.

"Meetings such as this bring focus to the work that needs to be done and provide a forum for cross-jurisdictional cooperation," said Minister Jones. "Since many of the issues for women are similar across Canada, it is important to work together to advance the social, economic and legal status of women."

The annual meeting of the Ministers Responsible for the Status of Women begins today in Alberta and concludes on Friday, September 26.
