Premier will debate in Corner Brook

During his speech to the Corner Brook Chamber of Commerce today, Premier Roger Grimes accepted the invitation offered by the chamber to participate in a leaders debate in the City of Corner Brook.

"I believe that if you are going to ask people to choose you to represent them and be the voice of their concerns and needs, then they should know what you stand for. More importantly, if you are the leader of a political party then you must be available to the public and be accountable for the ideals and views of the party you represent," said Premier Grimes. " A government has a great responsibility in determining the direction of this province. It has a great responsibility in setting the policies that guide the things that are important to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador like education, like health care, like job creation, like automobile insurance.

"This is why I am delighted to accept the invitation of the Corner Brook Chamber of Commerce to participate in their debate. A public debate is a good vehicle to demonstrate to people what you and your party will do for them, what your views are on certain issues, and how you will address challenges facing the province."

In the past three weeks Premier Grimes has accepted to participate in debates with the other two provincial party leaders on automobile insurance and other issues. Opportunities for debates existed with VOCM Openline, NTV, The Memorial University Debating Society, CBC Television and a debate at Memorial University with the Council of the Federation of Students. Unfortunately, none of the debates were scheduled as consensus to participate was not received from all party leaders.
