Remembering September 11

Premier Roger Grimes acknowledged today the two year anniversary of the tragic events that occurred in the United States on September 11, 2001. The Premier also took this opportunity to recognize the contribution of volunteers and others in Newfoundland and Labrador who have many personal memories of September 11, due to the significant role played by this province when airspace in the United States was shut down.

"The date September 11, will forever be ingrained in the minds of many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who put aside their daily lives to help approximately 13,000 unexpected airline passengers and crew in need of food, clothing, shelter and comfort. The heartwarming stories of home cooked meals provided by strangers, who soon became dear friends, are a testament to the people of this province.

"This compassion is one that was evident again during the past year in response to serious events such as the Badger and West Coast floods. I am thankful for the selfless attitude portrayed by many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians and commend all those who give their strength to those in need, particularly during times of crisis.

"Today marks two years since the United States became the victim of shocking terrorist attacks. While much time has passed, however, the frightening images of that day still remain vivid in the minds of those who watched the tragic events unfold. On behalf of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, I extend our deepest sympathies to the many families who lost loved ones during the tragic events of September 11 and will grieve on this sad anniversary."
