Minister announces schedule for round table discussions
on governments White Paper on Joint Fisheries Management

The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Yvonne Jones today announced the dates of a series of round table discussions on the governments White Paper on Joint Fisheries Management. The round table discussions are being co-chaired by Minister Jones and Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Tom Lush.

On May 26, 2003, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador released the White Paper on Joint Fisheries Management, which presented a new approach to commercial fisheries management in this province.

"Because of the importance and the complexity of the joint management concept, we committed to a series of round table meetings to discuss all aspects of this new approach to the management of our fisheries resources," Minister Jones stated. "We are now ready to meet that commitment to discuss joint management with all stakeholders, and we will start that process on July 14, holding meetings in major areas across the province."

Co-chair Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Tom Lush said: "The objective of the discussions will be to increase the understanding of key stakeholders on the approach outlined in the White Paper. We also want to ensure that those stakeholders have an opportunity to express their views on joint management, as well as allocation principles of adjacency and historical dependence under a new regime."

The round table discussions will be held in the following areas:

July 14 West St. Modeste 1:00 p.m.
July 14 Plum Point 8:00 p.m.
July 15 Corner Brook 7:00 p.m.
July 16 St. Johns 7:00 p.m.
July 17 Clarenville 7:00 p.m.
July 21 Gander 7:00 p.m.

Minister Jones noted that representatives of fish processors, harvesters, plant workers, unions, municipalities, regional economic boards, regional development associations and other organizations are being contacted to participate in the discussions.
