Minister comments on reports of reductions at 5 Wing Goose Bay

The provincial government has not been formally advised that the Germain air force is considering a reduction of its low level training program at 5 Wing Goose Bay, according to Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Tom Lush.

Minister Lush was responding to recent comments made by German Defense Minister Dr. Peter Struck who indicated he is carrying out a review of their operations.

Minister Lush stated, "It appears that because of budget constraints and international commitments, the German government has been conducting a review of its entire military operations, including 5 Wing Goose Bay."

The minister said, " It is clear that the nature of allied flight training at 5 Wing Goose Bay is changing and air forces want to ensure that their operations remain modern, cost effective, and relevant to their changing needs."

Minister Lush points to the fact that while the emphasis has been on low level flying up to now, the situation has changed somewhat as demonstrated in the Gulf War where low level flying was replaced in part by more modern weapons and flight techniques.

Minister Lush stated, "We are continuing with our strategy to solidify and enhance military presence in Newfoundland and Labrador. I have just completed high level meetings with Base Commander Col. Glynne Hines of 5 Wing Goose Bay, and Lt. Col. Peter McKeage of 9 Wing Gander. I will also meet with Commander Keith Mullaly of CFS St. Johns on Friday May 9.

"As a result of our meetings at 5 Wing Goose Bay and discussions with federal defense minister John McCallum and MP Lawrence OBrien, at our request, a joint federal-provincial marketing committee has been established. This committee is to develop a marketing plan focused on attracting new nations to the Goose Bay base, and ensure that facilities and programs remain relevant to the changing needs of the Allies."

The minister also noted, "I intend to move forward aggressively as we work with all stakeholders to ensure we have a larger military presence in this province."

Minister Lush and his officials will meet with CFS St. Johns Base Commander Keith Mullaly and his personnel at 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 9, 2003
