Premier calls on parties involved to return to bargaining
table to end strike at Gander and St. Johns airports

Premier Roger Grimes today called upon both parties connected with labour disputes that has resulted in a strike at St. Johns International Airport and the Gander International Airport to return to the bargaining table to find a mutually acceptable solution to these disputes.

"Government is concerned about the length of these strikes and the impact on the province and the economy," the Premier said. "The air industry provides a vital service to this province. A lengthy disruption in that service impacts on business, workers, tourism operators, municipalities, and economic development generally."

"Our tourism industry in particular is dependent on a reliable, uninterrupted service," he said, adding that the labour disputes at both airports are occurring at a time when tourists are making plans for the summer tourist season.

The Premier has asked Labour Minister Percy Barrett to contact the federal Labour Minister Claudette Bradshaw and seek her personal intervention in finding a resolution to these disputes. Provincial officials will also follow up with federal officials to offer their assistance in helping find timely resolutions.
