Additional funding to hire people with disabilities

Treasury Board President Joan Marie Aylward announced today that funding of $2.8 million has been provided for the continuation of the Opening Doors Program, which promotes the hiring of people with disabilities within the provincial public service.

"We are once again pleased to be able to increase funding to the Opening Doors Program which will allow us to further expand the number of permanent, full-time employment opportunities for persons with disabilities in the provincial public sector," said Minister Aylward.

Over the past three years, the budget for this program has increased and government is again committing an additional $300,000 for 2003-04. This brings the overall program budget to $2.8 million.

In addition, through the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Labour Market Development Agreement through Human Resources Development Canada, new funding has been secured in the Department of Youth Services and Post-Secondary Education in the amount of $290,171 in 2003-04. This will further allow the Opening Doors Program to create additional work experience opportunities for persons with disabilities in government departments.

"Government has been, and continues to be, committed to the employment and integration of persons with disabilities in our public service," said the minister.
