Premier proclaims Public Service Wellness Week in Newfoundland and Labrador

Premier Roger Grimes today proclaimed March 24 to March 28, 2003 as Public Service Wellness Week in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Wellness Week draws attention to the importance of employee and workplace health for both individual employees and the organization. It is organized by the Provincial Workplace Wellness Committee and coordinated by the Public Service Commission.

Premier Grimes said: "I applaud the good work that has been done to promote workplace wellness within the provincial public service. Research indicates that organizations can help promote employee well-being through positive practices and policies and that individuals can achieve wellness by adopting a lifestyle which enhances personal health. The provinces strategic health plan, Healthier Together, emphasizes a focus from one of simply treating illness to one of keeping people healthy."

Fonse Faour, chair of the Public Service Commission, said: "The objectives are to promote employee health through increased lifestyle awareness and to provide opportunities for employees to participate in health related activities. Our overall goal is to strengthen the public service so that it, in turn, can provide better service to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador."

The Provincial Workplace Wellness Committee has broad representation from labour and management and all regions of the province are represented. Since 1999, the committee has been actively promoting individual and organizational health within the public service.
