Premier pays tribute to Grace Sparkes

"The political and social fabric of our province has been made stronger by women like Grace Sparkes, who gave of her time and talent to this province," said Premier Roger Grimes in recognizing the passing of Ms. Sparkes this weekend. "I extend my sympathies to her family and friends. I also join with Newfoundlanders and Labradorians in recognizing her accomplishments; she has made a difference."

Born Grace Margaret Patten in Grand Bank on February 19, 1908, she was later honored by her region for her contributions with the naming of Grace Sparkes House. This facility provides safe accommodation, support and services to women and children who are victims of family violence. Ms. Sparkes also received numerous other honours for her work, including honorary degrees from Mount Allison and Memorial Universities, membership in the Curling Hall of Fame, Alumna of the Year of Memorial University as a founding member of this association and, most recently, she was honored as a Woman of Exceptional Achievement at the 15th annual Cabot Club Dinner. Her lifes work spanned teaching, journalism, and acting, as well as volunteer contributions to the YMCA, Canadian Red Cross, Kiwanis Music Festival, Memorial Universitys Board of Regents, the United Church of Canada and the National Council on Aging.

"Grace Sparkes was also dedicated to the political process in this province, was an ardent supporter of the return of responsible government in 1945, and ran in the provinces first provincial and federal elections,"continued Premier Grimes. "Her contributions to individuals, communities and the province are to be commended, and she is a role model for all of us. Her energy and perspectives will be missed and I join with my colleagues in celebrating her life."
