Environmental Assessment Bulletin

Environment Minister Bob Mercer has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

UNDERTAKING REGISTERED:

Gambo-Port Blandford Cottage Management Plan Review
Proponent: Department of Government Services and Lands

The proponent has registered a review and amendment of the 1993 Gambo-Port Blandford Cottage Allocation Plan. The review proposes four components:

  • withdrawal of cottage lots in conflict areas;
  • designation of alternative sites for future recreational use;
  • development of a planned cottage subdivision; and,
  • designation of cottage areas to accommodate existing illegal structures.

The Cottage Planning Area consists of an area south of the Trans Canada Highway between the towns of Gambo and Port Blandford, bordered by Terra Nova National Park to the east and the Bay du Nord Wilderness Area to the west. The Cottage Planning Area encompasses an area of approximately 140,000 hectares (1,400 square kilometres) much of which is inaccessible by non off-road vehicles but within which is the Town of Terra Nova. There are more than a dozen large lakes and ponds within the Cottage Planning Area including Maccle's Lake, Terra Nova Lake, and Lake St. John. The undertaking was registered on August 4, 2003; public comments are due by September 9, 2003; and the minister's decision is due on September 18, 2003.

The minister encourages all interested parties to become involved and to make comments known. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown.

UNDERTAKING NOT PERMITTED:

Partridge Pond (Blue Hills) ATV Trail
Proponent: Eric C. Collins

Upon consideration of the comments received from agencies and the public, it has been determined that the environmental effects of this undertaking on wildlife and outfitters in the area will be unacceptable. It is therefore decided not to allow the construction of this ATV trail to proceed.
