Craft book proves protecting the environment can be fun

The Multi-Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB) today released its environmental and educational craft book. This is a new educational tool designed to teach young school children about the importance of reducing waste and reusing items rather than throwing things in the garbage. The launch took place with 20 Grade 4 students at St. Bonaventures College School in St. Johns. Representatives from MMSB and Environment Minister Bob Mercer were on hand to see what school children can make from common household waste material.

"MMSB is very excited about the launch of this craft book. This is the first of many educational tools that MMSB will produce and deliver to schools, businesses, and residents in Newfoundland and Labrador," said Gordon Seabright, MMSB chairman. "This book will enhance the recycling programs that are in operation at more than 300 schools in the province."

The 30-page craft book is filled with great ideas for school-aged children. All of the crafts can be made with common household waste materials, many of which can be recycled and/or reused. The purpose of this book is to educate teachers, children, and parents about reusing household items while at the same time encouraging them to reduce their waste.

"The MMSB has been given the responsibility to raise public awareness on what we need to do to reach the goals we laid out in the Newfoundland and Labrador Waste Management Strategy. I commend the MMSB for taking the initiative to produce this craft book specifically for children," said Minister Mercer. "As we continuously seek out opportunities to educate the public about the importance of reducing waste, one key group that we wish to focus on is our young people. In turn, they will educate their parents, grandparents and other family members on the many opportunities that exist to recycle, reuse and reduce."

The launch of the craft book is one of the many activities happening in the province during Environment Week, June 1-7. During the week, MMSB encourages people to drop by their local Green Depot to celebrate the environment.

MMSBs mandate is to develop, implement and manage a variety of waste diversion programs in Newfoundland and Labrador. MMSB is responsible for the Beverage Container and Used Tire Recycling Programs, Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program, the administration of the Newfoundland and Labrador Waste Management Trust Fund, and public education and awareness regarding the Used Oil Recycling Program and the Newfoundland and Labrador Waste Management Strategy.
